Julio Baarslag Espinosa - 2025 Double top
About the luthier
Julio Baarslag Espinosa represents the continuation of two deep-rooted lutherie traditions. Raised in a family workshop active since 1980, he describes himself as having “lived in the workshop since birth,” nurtured in an environment where experimentation was encouraged from an early age. Alongside his technical education in renewable energy, he pursued a full apprenticeship in guitar making and ultimately chose to dedicate himself to his family’s craft. Under the guidance of his parents, Julio has developed a personal approach that combines elements of the Granada school with contemporary innovations, creating guitars that are both grounded in tradition and acoustically forward-thinking.
About the guitar
This brand-new 2025 concert guitar by Julio Baarslag Espinosa is a modern double-top design featuring a cedar soundboard and back and sides of Madagascar rosewood. These woods, together with a total weight of just 1.680 grams, give the instrument a powerful yet refined voice. The use of French polish throughout preserves the responsiveness of the wood while highlighting its natural elegance. With a 650 mm scale and 51 mm nut width, the guitar offers a modern ergonomic profile suitable for a wide range of playing styles.
Tonally, the guitar offers a smooth, rich character across the entire register. The first string stands out for its vibrancy and lyrical quality, responding quickly to right-hand articulation. The cedar top contributes warmth and immediacy, while the Madagascar rosewood enhances the instrument’s depth and projection. Despite its impressive power, the guitar retains a traditional Spanish voice with natural separation and expressive color, aligned with the Granada aesthetic. Its resonance sits between F-sharp and G, giving the body a stable and responsive foundation.
Fitted with Alessi tuning machines and constructed with clarity of voice and expressive reach in mind, this guitar is an ideal companion for concert-level performance, offering the tonal flexibility and reactivity needed by today’s classical guitarists.
