The Hopf family’s legacy in instrument making extends back to 1669, when the name was first documented in connection with the craft. This centuries-old tradition continues through Dieter Hopf, born in 1936, who has lived in Taunusstein since 1949. He trained as a violin maker in Mittenwald before turning his attention to guitars, earning his master craftsman diploma in 1968. Over the years, his instruments have been chosen by influential performers including Alexandre Lagoya, Baden Powell, and Michael Tröster. Dieter Hopf’s work is marked by meticulous craftsmanship and a refined tonal aesthetic, establishing him as one of Germany’s foremost classical guitar makers.

Built in 1980, this traditional concert guitar by Dieter Hopf displays the tonal depth and balance that have characterised his mature instruments. The cedar top, paired with Santos rosewood back and sides, yields a warm and focused voice with a smooth attack and strong sustain. Its response is immediate, yet never abrupt, allowing for nuanced phrasing and dynamic shading. The balance between registers is particularly well executed, making it suitable for both expressive melodic lines and intricate polyphony.
